Hi, Britta,
This is a good question. The answer is simple.
Cited material and quoted material belongs in the footnotes and the reference list. Other forms of acknowledgement belong in a section headed “acknowledgments."
Most theses begin with a section specifically for acknowledgements and thanks. This is the place to acknowledge and describe the sources and people who have helped you or contributed to the development of your thinking. This is also common in books and sometimes it is even seen in articles.
Yours,
Ken

Britta Boyer asked:
"In light of the support/examples that came my way – another question for the group – I would be interested to know how people acknowledge their relationships and knowledge(s) exchanges in this forum others or dialogically? Personally this seems important for those of us interested in design’s intersection with power hierarchy and decolonisation as a process -
“For example, if you have been sent a thesis and you don’t use the content but the structure (which represents a knowledge) has been a source of inspiration how do you credit it’s author – in a footnote and/or the acknowledgements as there is no precedent for this in the conventional thesis structures yet a “structure” has a great influence on how successful / or not the research is able to be disseminated and understood.
“If other conversations become pivotal in where your research evolves – do you acknowledge those dialogical relationships as being important to your own knowledge building?”
