Subject: CFP: The Northern Way, Conference, York & online, 23-24 Sep 2021
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Please find attached a 'Call for Papers' for a conference to be held this
coming September (23-24th), exploring the administrative records of the
Archbishops of York in the 14th century.
Please do consider offering either a paper or a shorter presentation, and/or
please do circulate this CFP to any who might be interested.
There is also a reminder that we are looking for feedback from users about
the new resources we are creating online - and a link to the instructions
for this.
The deadline for expressions of interest, and/or feedback on the resources,
is 31 March 2021.
with best wishes
The Northern Way

CALL FOR PAPERS
'THE NORTHERN WAY': THE ARCHBISHOPS OF YORK AND THE NORTH OF ENGLAND,
1304-1405
CONFERENCE, 23-24 SEPTEMBER 2021
'The Northern Way' is a research project funded by the Arts and Humanities
Research Council and based at the University of York in partnership with The
National Archives and with the support of York Minster.
Running from February 2019 to October 2021 the project aims to make the
administrative records of the archbishops of York more accessible to both
students and the general public, and to provide a history of the role of the
Archbishops in governing the northern region over that period. More details
are here: https://www.york.ac.uk/history/research/northern-way/
Our conference will explore the many different ways in which the
administrative records of the Archbishops of York can be used to expand our
understanding of the middle ages. The chronological focus of the conference
will be on the period 1250-1450, and we are particularly interested in
offers of papers that focus on the use of records in the Borthwick Institute
for Archives (including the registers of the archbishops of York), related
archive offices in the northern province and The National Archives.
We are inviting proposals for papers, and for shorter 'show, tell and ask'
discussion pieces from interested scholars (at any stage of their career)
and local historians.
1. Conference paper - (maximum 20 minutes). We will also be publishing
a selection of papers in an edited volume. Please indicate if you would be
interested in being included.
2. 'Show, tell and ask' - (maximum 5 minutes). The purpose of these
pieces is to invite anyone who may not feel ready to present a full paper
but who may have found some interesting information in the records about
which they would like to know more. Presenters will simply present their
discovery and then invite the audience to answer their questions and to
discuss it.
Online or in person? At the moment we are anticipating that at least some,
and possibly all, of the conference will need to be held online but we are
hoping that at least a small element of the event will be possible in
person. Please indicate below whether you would wish to attend in person if
possible.
If you would like to offer a paper or presentation, please complete the
attached form and return to [log in to unmask] by 31 March
2021.
FEEDBACK on Online Resources. This is just a reminder that we are also
seeking feedback on the online resources that our project is creating.
Feedback as soon as possible (and no later than 31 March 2021) would be very
helpful to us. Full instructions for providing feedback can be found here:
