Hi Robert.

I required students to submit a 3-minute video recording of themselves presenting (using PPT) research they had completed during the semester, along with a written reflection critically evaluating their presentation.

Best,

Kate

Subject: Alternatives to sit-down exams for Intro Ling courses

Dear all

Our Introduction to Linguistics covers the usual topics for English majors - phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics. We usually have a sit-down exam with moderately complex questions, i.e. not just ticking boxes, but providing short answers (e.g. from the following ten words, select two antonyms, two synonyms, two hyponyms; or provide a syntactic analysis of the following sentence etc.).

Because of Covid we can't have this exam in a classroom and we're struggling to find suitable alternatives.

- If the students do the exam at home during the allotted time (90 minutes), they might communicate with each other and copy answers.

Having them switch on their video cameras to make sure they don't cheat is not an option (we can't force them, there might be legitimate technical issues, and it would probably not be effective anyway).

- Asking them to write an essay on a particular question is not really suitable for this class because it's hard to find something that would cover all the topics covered in class.

I'm sure many of you are/have been struggling with similar problems. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Best wishes

Robert
