SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY invites applications to fill one full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor in Industrial and Interaction Design (IID) position within the School of Design, College of Visual and Performing Arts.
Our five-year program leads to a Bachelor of Industrial Design (BID) degree and has consistently been ranked among the best programs in the USA. We are seeking a candidate to join a faculty who share a mission to educate a new generation of design professionals. We believe graduates must be armed with both a core set of foundational skills as well as a broad understanding of the opportunities and responsibilities afforded by current technological innovations.
With a program of approximately 100 students, we seek to educate students who, upon graduation, will be prepared to join the field in a variety of categories ranging from consultancies, in-house and corporate design, to entrepreneurial start-ups. By offering a curriculum that is built upon an expansive foundation of design expertise, we expect graduates of the University to become leaders who are prepared to shape the future of design. As a top tier research institution, Syracuse University faculty and students are encouraged to interact with the academic core of the University.
The ideal candidate combines a deep core of knowledge within their area of emphasis with the flexibility to engage collaboratively with a diverse set of colleagues within the program and across the School. As a member of the University faculty, you will be expected to maintain a full teaching load while developing a research agenda capable of achieving national and international recognition in the fields of industrial, product, interaction or user experience design, or related areas. A terminal degree in Industrial Design or a closely related field is recommended, though applications which demonstrate a combination of education and significant industry experience are equally encouraged. The school seeks candidates whose professional experience, research, and teaching, has also prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education.
The School of Design is an inquisitive and intelligent community of faculty and students who address issues in context. As a professionally oriented academic unit in a large research university, the School is fully committed to forging bold, imaginative, reciprocal relationships with constituents who are local as well as global. With a long and distinguished history at Syracuse University, the School of Design currently offers several highly ranked undergraduate programs, including Industrial and Interaction Design (BID), Environmental and Interior Design (BFA), Fashion Design (BFA), and Communications Design (BFA). The School has also recently launched a BS degree in Design Studies, which is rapidly growing, and also houses a graduate program in Museum Studies and an MFA in Design. Enrolling approximately 500 undergraduate and 50 graduate students, the School of Design occupies the Nancy Cantor Warehouse in downtown Syracuse.
