Framing the Normal
Examining Embodied and Artistic Practices in Musicians’ Movement Repertoire
Call for Papers
We are happy to announce a Call for Papers for the 2-day conference entitled ‘Framing the Normal: Examining Embodied and Artistic Practices in Musicians’ Movement Repertoire’. The conference will take place on the 3rd and 4th of May 2021 in the Antwerp, Belgium at deSingel Arts Campus. Our call is open to any scholarly and artistic developments pertaining to the subject as detailed below and can take the form of a paper, performance-paper, performance or colloquial paper. The deadline for submissions is the 15th of January, 2021 and we will notify those invited to present by the early February, 2021.
The language of the conference will be English.
Framing the Normal: Examining Embodied and Artistic Practices in Musicians’ Movement Repertoire
Musicians and conductors are performers that utilize movements on stage to generate sounds that audiences perceive as music. Composers, artistic directors, and concert organizers today are becoming more aware of a repertoire of performative and everyday ‘normal’ movements and are beginning to consider these as artistic stimuli sui generis, with the potential to enhance or direct the audience’s perception of a piece.
During this international seminar, through paper presentations, performances, and discussion, the following questions will be addressed:
· How can we, as performers, develop our music-making movement repertoire and gestural skill set to meet this growing practice of movement-centred acts and interventions?
· Danish composer Simon Steen-Andersen in his composition Black Box Music (2012) deployed the ‘image of the conductor to play on the audience’s expectations’. What happens when composers begin to incorporate movement repertoire in their pieces, how do they contend with the traditional (and hierarchical) performance situation and how do the gestures of the conductor lead to a new context of perception?
· What are the methods and processes that composers and artistic directors apply when questioning the role of the musicians’ and conductor’s body on stage?
In order to delve deeper into the topic and questions, we will hold a seminar in Antwerp on 3-4 May 2021 in deSingel Arts Campus. Participants will both be invited personally and through an open call for papers, performance-papers, performances, and colloquial papers. Keynote Håkon Stene will present his research Towards a Post-Instrumental Practice, and also take part in a panel discussion with Jessie Marino and Magda Thielemans, moderated by the seminar organizers. Planned performances include newly commissioned works by Jessie Marino (US), a revised solo work for conductor by Thierry De Mey (B), and Concert for Piano and Orchestra (1957-58) by John Cage.
We invite proposals for presentations of any kinds, from scholarly papers to performances. The seminar will open at 10:00 (Central European time) on Monday 3rd May and will close on Tuesday 4th May at 21:00. All proposals will consist of 20 minute presentations with ten minutes of discussion. Two evening concerts of which contain proposed performances 20 minutes each will occur. An open, collaborative spirit of inquiry is encouraged throughout.
Please submit your proposals to [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> no later than the 15th of January 2021. Proposals should contain an abstract (max 300 words max) and a biography of the author(s) (max 300 words).
