Ah, communication. If we are not careful, that will start another long
debate on this network.
I find it amusing that many Graphic Designers and Design Programs are now
using the label "Communication," but the ability of us to read and
comprehend the very small, low-contrast type that the Graphic designers
trained in art schools prefer to use defeats the intended purpose of
communication. (I quickly add that this is not true for many graphic
designers, many of whom I work with and respect. But it does appear to be
an increasing tendency. I've now seen cautionary labels on medication that
is so small and low in contrast, that neither my wife nor I could read it,
even with the aid of a flashlight and magnifying glass.)

We too (At UC San Diego). We call it PPE (Power, Privilege, and Ethical
responsibility).
The problem, I believe, does not rest with designers. That's because we are
usually at the mercy of our bosses or clients. Until more designers are in
a position of Power -- head of the company or, at the least, in the C-level
positions (in the C-Suite), designers have little say in what a company
produces.
This Papnek's claim that "There are professions more harmful than
industrial design, but only a very few of them" is well-intended but wrong:
He gives too much credit to designers who are generally too low in the
power structure to matter.
enough.
