David,
I love your article, thank you for sharing. It reads very well. It is
clear, important, personable, with good examples - - altogether enjoyable.
And the opener is just uncomfortable enough to give the piece some
frission.
I do think about this topic a lot - - why is design so new, in the academy?
Why didn't Plato, for instance, see himself as a designer? Design merged
with philosophy certainly does seem *obvious*, as you say.
I noticed that the title thesis, "philosophy as design", actually dropped
the philosophy part by the end (see below) . I find that interesting,
rhetorically. Makes it easier to swallow. Because the whole idea of
philosophy is just so easy to misunderstand, especially for anyone who has
taken a philosophy class, read a philosophy paper or walked by a philosophy
department. Classically, philosophy really isn't about finding the truth,
it's about better living. Which lines up just perfectly with what we call
design.
Philosophy as design, very nice!
Cheers, Derek
(the conclusion and epitome of the piece)
"Suppose we, as designers and design educators, rethink our position in the
intellectual universe, just as Copernicus rethought the position of the sun
in the physical universe. Here we are currently at the periphery of the
intellectual world: a minor satellite of the academic and intellectual
world. Contrast our orbit and sphere of influence, as it were, to that of
science, the current centre of attention and funding when it comes to
research and prestige.
Suppose we assert, as I have suggested, that design, more than any other
discipline in or outside the academy, is the necessary foundation from
which all other human pursuits stem, that our capacity to design is
fundamental to our social and economic life. Needless to say, this is not a
proposition that would be accepted readily by everybody. We would have to
argue the case for such a proposition. However, as I hope I have shown you,
it is a proposition with a strong basis in fact and argument"
