Hi Ole,
The concept of function is always external for the object. It shows the relationship of the object with other objects. I use it the way it is used in architecture and facilities programming. No anthropomorphic thoughts. If someone has intentions, this is the designer.
By the way, I didn't expect the anthropomorphic interpretation. I was concerned that someone might challenge the use of functionalist, structural-functionalist, systemic-functionalist concept. I swerved away from those orientations more than three decades ago. They were not cool after the mid-eighties. But in the last decade, we have these wonderful conferences on systems thinking in design. I got again into my old ways without anxiety about being outdated.
I can also confess that I am not a fan of "affordance." I think in a different way and it is very rare that I can use the benefits of that concept. It has a good range of applicability, but still, not every hammer will do a good job for me. Anyway, my appreciation for Gibson. He created the concept for psychologists, not for facilities planners.
Best wishes,
Lubomir

And what about "unintended functions" in Spanish? Or unintended uses?
Lubomir,
very interesting thread to follow about translation of, and, affordances (which colleagues and I also have struggled with translating into Norwegian…).
For me, putting intention into the mix as you suggest (if I interpret your post correctly) by «unintended functions» would possibly be a case of anthropomorphising the objects that might or might not have affordances; can they have – or not have – intentions?
best regards,
