Hi Zooarchers,
I'm a masters student at the University of Sheffield. For my dissertation, I'm investigating the presence of animals in the inhumations of the early Anglo-Saxons, focusing on the southeast and east of England.
Unfortunately not having access to a library has meant I have been unable to find certain papers, so I was wondering if anyone had pdfs of the following:
Newman, J. 2006. ‘Another Anglo-Saxon Horse and Rider Burial from Suffolk’, Saxon 44
Williams, H. 2005. Animals, ashes and ancestors, in A. Pluskowski (ed.) Just Skin and Bones? New Perspectives on Human-Animal Relations in the Historical Past, 19–40, Oxford: Brit. Archaeol. Rep., Int. Ser., 1410
Muller 1984 Zoological and Historical interpretation of bones form food and sacrifices in Early medieval times, in Animals and Archaeology 4: husbandry in Europe eds C. Grigson and J. Clutton Brock
Harman, M 1993 The animal burials: discussion. The horse burials: the skeletons, in Kinsley, A G (ed) Excavations on the Romano-British settlement and Anglo-Saxon Cemetery at Broughton Lodge, Willoughby-on-the-Wolds, Nottinghamshire 1964-8. (Nottingham Archaeol Monogr 4). Nottingham: Nottingham Archaeol, 5861
Bond, J.M. and Worley, F.L. 2006: Companions in death: the roles of animals in Anglo-Saxon and Viking cremation rituals in Britain. In Gowland, R. and Knusel, C. (eds.), Social Archaeology of Funerary Remains (Oxford), 89–98.
I am also hoping to do a brief comparison to contemporary southern Scandinavia and northern Germany, so if anyone has information about sites from this area that would be greatly appreciated.
Of course, any other advice is always welcome!
Thank you,
Alice Dixon
