Apologies if my answer was a little abrupt.
Etymologies do not help in this instance. When we take a word or idea from one context and use it in another new context, AS IF it applied, we are making a metaphor. If we then go on to use the metaphor as it it was identical to the thing it derived from, not everything stays the same. That is all. Metaphors are never the same as the thing they are metaphors of. That is the beauty and danger of metaphors.
