Greetings João, Gabriele, and all,
Thanks for your useful feedback on my concept proposal. After reflecting on your feedback, it appears to me that the analogy with education does yield an acceptable solution. As I see it, the crux of the issue is whether a code of conduct for PHD_DESIGN should be voluntary or compulsory.
A compulsory code of conduct requires implementing infrastructure and would be costly to enforce. In contrast, a voluntary code of conduct represents a workable compromise.
This view is based on reframing the issue from the perspective that the concerns of those who desire a code of conduct are moral concerns. My reasoning is as follows:
If the target concept [conduct on PHD_DESIGN] is approached as if it is the source concept [morality], then a solution might be... [religious freedom].
Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that “Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion.”
The right to express religious beliefs includes a range of activities, for example, performing practices and disseminating publications in connection with those beliefs.
Religious freedom does not preclude criticism of beliefs, but requires respect for the right of others to hold a different beliefs.
The analogy between a Code of Conduct for PHD_DESIGN and religious freedom implies that:
- The rights of those list members who choose to hold the beliefs of the Code of Conduct are to be respected.
- The rights of those members who do not wish to hold the beliefs of the Code of Conduct are to be respected.
- The list owners uphold all list members’ rights to freedom of thought, conscience and religion according to article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the relevant UK laws.
So, in my view, a workable compromise might be that if there is a Code of Conduct for PHD_DESIGN, then it should be voluntary.
Best,
Luke
