Dear Luke,

Thanks for engaging with the topic of a code of conduct, I appreciate it.

Also, I have to apologize in advance: I'm packing my bags today and I will
be out of town for the next 3 weeks, so I won't be able to follow up after
this message. I hope that others will continue this productive discussion
in my absence.

I see what you're proposing, and I think it has its own merits.
Accountability and transparency are always important!
However, I gently disagree with the initial framing that is principally in
terms of education and self-assessment. To me (but I certainly welcome
other perspectives!), a code of conduct is about supporting inclusion,
guaranteeing a space where everyone feels safe to contribute. In my view,
its main objective would be to increase participation to the list (as in:
more people posting, and a way more diverse population of "highly
active posters")

In my opinion, we can make progress towards this objective with a code of
conduct that affirms inclusion, that establishes this list as a supportive
space, and makes it explicit that everyone is welcome to contribute. Please
see https://varia.zone/en/pages/code-of-conduct.html for an example of what
I'm talking about.
I have heard people who are in a less privileged position than I am who
said that the acts of actively inviting all contributions, and listening to
them, and making space for people to speak and be heard is fundamentally
important. I think we should do that.
(please, add to this! correct me if I'm wrong! I have no desire to speak
for others, I am just trying to boost other voices)

I suspect that much more feedback may come from people who post less
frequently here. I will just shut up and leave space for them.

I will be away for a few weeks, I look very much forward to see the results
of this discussion

cheers
G:
