Hi Don and all,
I agree with some of Don’s suggested rules, but I think responses or disagreements should be on the list and public. I have witnessed too may people cut down and humiliated by private responses from members of this list to which they feel unable to respond.
As an old, and now bearded white (or slightly sallow skinned) male, I am unable to navigate the waves of hostility directed at me as a member of the despised ruling elite. I should add, just to lower my status, I am only attached to a university by a slender thread. I left full employment in academia some 35 years ago because I wanted to remain an academic. The winds of change that were howling through the hallowed halls were an unwelcome distraction to clear thinking. My attachment to the ANU is as an adjunct professor only, and I suspect that I retain the title only because they forgot to take my name off their website.
Nonetheless, this list interests me because of its central focus. If some of my responses have caused offence, my apologies. But, in defence I would suggest that passion should always remain part of intellectual life. Rudeness and putting people down is always unacceptable. Expressing exasperation should be allowed.
David
