medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
apologies for cross-posting
I have just uploaded another three pages to my online archive.
The Gellone Sacramentary , ca.780-800, was exhibited in the great
Merovingian show in Paris a few years ago. I was able to shoot several
of the disbound bifolia in detail, including the Crucifixion leaf and a
peacock whose body forms one initial, its feet another initial below.

The Jewish ritual bath in Friedberg, dated 1260, is an astonishing space
cut deep into the living basalt with a natural spring at the bottom and
a single oculus at the top. Splendid foliate capitals.

The ca.1360 mosque lamp in the Freer is unusually well documented, with
inscriptions naming both its patron (Sultan Hasan, reg. 1347–51 and
1354-61) and its place (Cairo madrasa) in lovely blue enamel.

None of this is directly related to plagues, as far as I know, so
perhaps the images can provide a bit of relief!
all best,
Genevra
