Health Services Researcher
Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, Oxford

Grade 7: £32,817 - £40,322 p.a.

Applications are invited for a health services researcher to work on the national evaluation of the NHS App, a new patient-facing tool for digital access to a range of NHS services. This is an outstanding opportunity for a postdoctoral researcher to participate in high-impact work on a major aspect of digital transformation in healthcare, as well as ongoing Covid-19 crisis management. The NHS App has recently been rolled out across 95% of GP surgeries in England, to improve patient access to primary care, contribute to better patient experiences, save time in GP practices and promote self-care.

The postholder will work on the qualitative process evaluation of the NHS App, focusing on its implementation, national roll-out and routinisation, including as part of the Covid-19 response. The aim will be to understand staff and patient experiences, impact on work routines and professional roles, patient engagement and satisfaction with the service, and unanticipated consequences. The evaluation will use a comparative case study design including online methods as needed (or face-to-face when this becomes feasible) such as semi-structured interviews, group discussions and demonstration of technology-in-use.

Responsibilities of the postholder will include participant recruitment, longitudinal data collection across field sites and participant groups, and theoretically-informed data analysis to produce rich case narratives.

You will hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field (e.g. health services research, medical sociology, science and technology studies, human-computer interaction) and have experience in qualitative research, including a track record contributing to peer-reviewed publications and presenting in academic conferences.

You will be based in the Radcliffe Primary Care Building, Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, Woodstock Road, Oxford, OX2 6GG.

The position is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Services and Delivery Research (HS&DR) programme for 21 months.

For an informal discussion please contact Dr Chrysanthi Papoutsi ([log in to unmask]).

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on Friday 8 May 2020. Virtual interviews will be held on Friday 22 May 2020.
