Dear all,
We would like to share the preliminary results of Design for Emergency, an
initiative we launched a month ago with the aim of:
- collecting problems, needs, and feelings of people forced to social
distancing and confinement because of coronavirus;
- designing and implementing ad-hoc solutions in an open and
collaborative way.
More details on the project can be found at
https://www.designforemergency.com

We hope the results of our study will be useful to the design community -
scholars, teachers, students, as well as anyone who wants to rapidly design
and implement solutions addressing this emergency. We are open to
partnerships with other institutes and universities who would like to
extend this initiative to their countries, or to plan design workshops and
activities together.
We started very small and agile, but the project is growing fast, and we
are trying to adjust it to how the situation evolves both globally and
locally.
The initiative is (roughly) made of three steps:
- Collecting information on people’s problems and feelings through a
survey we disseminated in different countries (for now Italy, Spain, US,
Brazil, France, and Korea). So far, we have analyzed and published data
collected in Italy (available at
https://www.designforemergency.com/analysis-eng
<https://nam05.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.designforemergency.com%2Fanalysis-eng&data=02%7C01%7Cs.colombo%40northeastern.edu%7C63311d18d67b44c6644208d7e3d60899%7Ca8eec281aaa34daeac9b9a398b9215e7%7C0%7C0%7C637228380727593552&sdata=sXhIPpxjd3M81CcQ8kNK9x8jDrWVSFWEjfQSh9lh%2B2o%3D&reserved=0>
);
- Designing seed ideas of solutions addressing the problems, needs and
emotions of people dealing with social distancing, confinement, and
isolation, and publishing them on the Design for Emergency Open Platform
(through CC license);
- Developing and implementing these ideas collaboratively.
If anyone is interested in contributing to one or more of these activities,
we would like to hear from you.
If you live in one of the countries where we have launched the survey, we
would really appreciate if you could support this initiative by responding
to the questionnaire and by spreading it. We collected almost 2000
responses from Italy, but we still need help to reach a large number of
people in other countries.
Our final goal is to create a knowledge base and an open design platform to
ideate and implement solutions that help communities deal with this
emergency and what will come next.
All the best, and stay safe.
