The MRC Biostatistics Unit is one of Europe's leading biostatistics research institutions. Our focus is to deliver new analytical and computational strategies for the challenging tasks facing biomedicine and public health.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and independent researcher to make a crucial contribution to the ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic, working on the assessment of the severity of COVID-19 through estimation of the probability that infection leads to a severe event e.g. hospitalisation, intensive care admission and mortality.
The post is funded by the MRC/UKRI/NIHR COVID-19 Rapid Response Call, with partners including Public Health England (PHE) and the University of Warwick, in collaboration with Prof. Lipsitch at Harvard University and Prof. Cowling at Hong Kong University.
The post-holder will work with Dr Anne Presanis in Prof. Daniela De Angelis' group, using methods in survival analysis and Bayesian evidence synthesis. The research will involve the analysis and synthesis of evidence from multiple national (collected by NHS England and PHE) and international public health surveillance and other datasets. Interim results will be provided to PHE's Modelling Cell and to SPI-M, the government advisory group on modelling, in real-time. This work represents a unique opportunity to have a direct impact on the current pandemic.
Experience in survival analysis, multi-state modelling, Bayesian evidence synthesis or epidemic modelling are crucial for this position. Successful candidates will be appointed at either Senior Research Associate (Grade 9) or Research Associate (Grade 7), depending on their level of experience.
Appointment to Senior Research Associate is subject to approval from the Faculty Board of Clinical Medicine.
