The MRC Biostatistics Unit, one of Europe's leading biostatistics research institutions, is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for a talented candidate to work on an internship project on emulating target trials jointly with Roche Pharmaceuticals. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are regarded as the gold standard for estimating causal effects of treatments on health outcomes. Especially in the era of personalized healthcare, RCTs are not always feasible due to population heterogeneity and resource/ethical constraints. To remedy this, target trial emulation, recently proposed by Hernán and Robins (2016, https://doi.org/10.1093/aje/kwv254 ), aims to improve the quality of observational epidemiology through the application of trial design principles to the analysis of observational data. This 6-month project aims to develop an R package for estimating intention-to-treat and per-protocol effects in emulated trials using electronic health records from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) in the United Kingdom. The successful candidate will work closely with statisticians and data scientists in cross-functional teams at Roche Pharmaceuticals on an application to neurological disorders and will also have opportunities to work with Dr Li Su and senior statisticians at the MRC Biostatistics Unit on methodological problems that may arise from the application.
This internship might ideally suit those close to completing their Masters studies, however, we are looking for the best applicants, regardless of background or career stage. Thus, applications from undergraduate students as well as those close to the completion of their PhD are also welcome. Previous experience of the statistical software R is essential and an interest in causal inference methods would be advantageous.
The successful candidate will be appointed as a Research Assistant at Grade 5 (£26,715 - £30,942) ideally to start in July/August 2020 for 6 months. The Unit is actively seeking to increase diversity among its staff, including promoting an equitable representation of men and women. The Unit therefore especially encourages applications from women, from minority ethnic groups and from those with non-standard career paths. Appointment will be made on merit.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 6 months in the first instance.
