Dear List,
The subject of ventilators and the COVID-19 Pandemic came up on this list a couple of weeks ago, first in regard to James Dyson's offer to fast-track the design and manufacture of a user-friendly ventilator, followed by comments and suggestions ranging from praise for a humanitarian effort, to questioning the motivations behind the focus on Dyson rather than other lesser known individuals or companies, to alternatives to ventilators that address breathing problems caused by the virus, to well-informed reminders of how complicated (and time-consuming) the design process of such initiatives can be. Today's NY Times (business section) offers a case study of sorts for one such initiative that took place in New York, detailing the various strands of that process, including technology, local government sponsorship, need, regulatory approval, collaboration among individuals with varied background and skills, and the difficulties of scaling up production. No doubt many list members have seen the article (illustrated too) or are aware of the project from other sources. But just in case you're not, the URL is below.

From The New York Times:
New York Needed Ventilators. So They Developed One in a Month.
The pandemic inspired an innovative project to design and make a low-cost ventilator in weeks, not years.
