hi Victoria,
I worked on an internal research project with Jessica Suess (https://twitter.com/jessicasuess) in 2014-15 that delivered a prototype for indoor navigation and location sensing.
After looking around (unsuccessfully) for a suitable off the shelf solution thus we worked with external developers and designed a solution that was platform agnostic to show trends as well as patterns of usage. The actual resolution for detection was set rather low (floor/gallery/entrance) taking into account radio dynamics .
The data for prototyping was suitably anonymised (one way hash) but we did not transition to a full blown service due to a lack of resourcing.
One suggestion would be would be to reach out to your IT team in the first instance (if you haven't already) to perhaps see if there is an analytics capability from the wireless platform and having a chat with your legal time for validation.
Hope this helps,

Subject: Mapping physical journeys through Wi-Fi
Hi all,
A question here regarding mapping the physical journey of visitors around our site. We are considering monitoring this via our Wi-Fi portal, so when visitors login, we can determine where is most popular / busy during certain points in the day. Has anyone used this method, and if so, did you need to ask permissions to map their journey and use this data? Just wondering on what level of transparency we need to provide.
Many thanks in advance,
Victoria Jenner
