Not having used Windows since 2005, I'm not au fait with changes in
Win10 which complicate the use of the pal.exe autorun file (which was
compiled using Win3.1). I did mention that it might have to be run in
the compatibility layer. I am now providing more precise advice,
having had the opportunity to use my partner's new PC with Win10. The
advice begins with the CD which I can now still provide, but, as can
be followed further down, the method for the pal.exe file is the same
whether on CD or downloaded.
About this CD
Virus-checking
The CD has been checked using F-Secure and ClamTK.
Virus-checkers
The programme boots up the web browser in your system to host the
programme. Your virus-checker may interpret this action as an attempt
to connect to the internet and so block the programme. In fact, the
browser only runs within your system without connecting to any
external source. If your virus-checker blocks, it is necessary to
enter the control panel of your virus-checker to allow this specific
programme to run.
Windows 10
Because of changes in Windows 10, the CD may not run automatically if
you double-click on pal.exe. What is necessary is to enter file
manager, locate the CD drive and pal.exe. Then right-click on pal.exe.
The resulting menu has an option to use a compatibility layer. Select
this option. Usually, you will then be offered a default compatibility
setting. Normally, this selection will suffice. The programme will
then show a progress bar of the programme loading, following which
your browser will open at the home page of the programme.
A note about downloaded pal.exe
The file pal.exe can also be downloaded from my main website. The
procedure is exactly the same as above. Locate pal.exe in your file
manager, right-click, select the compatibility layer and continue as
above.
