Dear colleagues,
I trust you are all well. As biochemistry and haematology labs operate at CL2 levels, how many labs have suspended testing on pleural fluids and faeces where the corona viral load has been shown to be relatively high? I am assuming we are all doing local risk assessments but it would be good to know how many labs have actually taken this course of action. Some labs have recently posted here saying that they have stopped analysing these specimen. I am especially concerned about pleural fluid pH testing, which our clinicians rely on to decide whether to drain the chest or not. Injecting samples into a blood gas analyser carries enormous risk as it has the potential to form droplets. We have decided to continue FIT testing as the samples are well contained in the collection devices and there is no sample preparation required so the risk is negligible. Any suggestions and advice gratefully received.
Thanks,
Dr Rav Sodi
