I run the MA Service Design at UAL and we've been working a lot on the ethics of what projects we take on with students, based a lot on my colleague Lara Salinas' research into Knowledge Exchange. This is because almost all the projects that make up the course are live (https://masedi.myblog.arts.ac.uk/)
It's not finalised as a formal code yet, and we're working on a paper about this. The main issues we are looking at are:
- Is this something that could be defined as work that could have been done by a consultancy?
- What is the exchange between the students and the project partners? Is it clear who is gaining what out of the project? Is it clear who is giving what?
- Are students being paid for their work? Is there payment in kind?
