medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Genevra,
Thanks for the congratulation and for asking!
The book contains, for the first time, the complete and unredacted
edition of the German text. The 2009 book (Schleif and Schier:
Katerina's Windows. Donation and Devotion, Art and Music, as Heard and
Seen in the Writings of a Birgittine Nun) does not contain any edition
since this would have brought the size of the book up to about 900
pages. The three of us also revisited the English translation and
adjusted and upgraded it where we deemed it necessary. Runica et
Mediaevalia in Stockholm did an excellent job with the double page
layout: German on the left and English on the right so that scholars
can immediately check passages in the original, which is especially
important when Katerina refers to the donation of art and the technology
of glass windows. Katerina's concrete wording often matters and is -- of
course -- open for interpretation. What we cold not incorporate or
reduce to footnoting is the extensive commentary that we published in
the 2009 book since again this would have added several hundred pages.
Scholars are thus encouraged to use both books in combination which is
facilitated by identical numbering of the letters and the extensive
indexes. What is also new in Pepper for Prayer is the introduction,
especially the sections about codicology (e.g. watermarks) and the
language of the letters, information that was not available previously.
We think that the letters are full of otherwise unknown material and
details in respect to monastic life and the administration of a
monastery on the eve of the Reformation that can be of interest to many
areas.
