Defining music literacy in the UK today: conversations and reflections on what it is and how it may be taught and supported.
Music Literacy Study Day (funded by the IMR and SMA)
Senate House, London.
Saturday 23rd May 2020, 10.00-16.30.
Keynote speakers:
Professor Julian Horton (Durham University)
Dr Rebecca Berkley (University of Reading)
The aim of this highly interactive Study Day is to create (and capture) conversations and reflections on the teaching of music literacy in schools, sixth forms, colleges and universities today in the UK, with a focus on the English system. With the permission of delegates, the anonymous discussion points will form part of the data for the Music Literacy Project: “Questioning the gap: defining a role for the SMA in preparing students for music degrees in higher education today.”
If you are a music teacher (school, college, university, peripatetic, private), then your contribution to the day would be most welcome as well as offering an opportunity for CPD. Music students (sixth form, undergraduate or postgraduate) are also most welcome.
Registration is now open. There is a modest fee to cover conference costs of £25 for delegates. 60 places are available. Here is the link for registration:
