Nominations will close soon for the annual BCS Lovelace medal and BCS Needham award
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nominations are open for the annual BCS Lovelace medal and BCS Needham award. As the new Chair of the Awards Committee I am writing to you to ask you to nominate your colleagues for these prestigious awards.
The deadline for nominations for both awards is **Friday 24 January 2020**. Details are at the end of this email, and at https://www.bcs.org/more/awards-and-competitions/ which contains information about eligibility and the rules of submission for both awards. In particular, the Awards Committee would very much like to encourage all forms of contribution to computer science, which should be interpreted very broadly to include informatics, computer engineering, contributions to teaching and industry.
Marta Kwiatkowska, Oxford, won the BCS Lovelace medal for 2019. Her Lovelace lecture is on 24 March 2020 at the Royal Society, details to be confirmed.
Cristian Cadar, Imperial, won the BCS Roger Needham award for 2019. His Needham lecture is on Thursday 11 June 2020 at the Royal Society, details to be confirmed.
Below I list the Lovelace and Needham winners for the previous six years; details can be found on the web at https://www.bcs.org/more/awards-and-competitions/ including their lectures.
So please nominate your colleagues for both the BCS Lovelace Medal and Needham Awards. I am sure that as many of you are no doubt well advanced in drafting your REF submissions you will be well aware of those who might be suitable! But please also consider those from outside your institution, including from industry. Please especially consider nominating women as I understand there have traditionally not been many women nominated for either award.
Thanks!
Best wishes
Tony Cohn

Details about the BCS Lovelace medal and Needham award
The Lovelace medal is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the understanding or advancement of computer science. It is a senior award. The expectation is that is given to an academic or industrialist with a direct connection with the UK. The committee would very much like to encourage all forms of contribution to computer science, which should be interpreted very broadly to include informatics, computer engineering, contributions to teaching and industry.
The Roger Needham award is made for a distinguished research contribution in computer science, again interpreted broadly, by a UK-based researcher who has completed up to 10 years post-doctoral research. Microsoft Research sponsors this award. The winner of the award will receive a £5,000 prize and the opportunity to present their work at the annual Roger Needham lecture, the following year.
Details of both awards can be found at https://www.bcs.org/more/awards-and-competitions/
For both awards, the candidates nominated will be automatically considered for three years. The nominator will be invited to update the application each year and, to avoid wasting time, given feedback when the committee judges the application to be unlikely to succeed.
