medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hello medievalists - I have wandered outside my ken, and I need your help. I have a 16th century (I think) coat of arms in a manuscript (a choral psalter, but that seems to have been transferred in its medieval history) that I’d like to identify. It’s red and white, with a red ecclesiastical hat and a few tassels. I’d be suprised if it was a cardinal’s hat, simply because I doubt I’d be that lucky, and because it only has six tassels, and because the quality is mediocre. The images on the field are, I think, a black eagle over a white stage (as I say, the quality is mediocre), on a field which is white on top and red and white striped on the bottom. I have no idea what I’m doing here. Does any know how to go about identification? Are there standard reference books that one uses for this? How do people do this work?
