medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hello Rosemary,
As a generalisation your statement about Christian name only is surely correct, surnames having been relatively uncommon in the medieval period. But evidence does exist for bishops' seals sometimes having displayed the owner's Christian name followed by a surname. See, for example, Joseph Roman, _Sigillographie du diocèse de Gap_ (Paris and Grenoble, 1870), pp. 43-46, nos. 12-13 (seals of Geoffroy de Launsel, 1289-1314) and 14 (seal of Bertrand de Launsel, 1316-1318):

PS: I know next to nothing about the diocese of Gap. These examples were simply the first to come up in pertinent responses to Google searching using the phrase 'sigillographie episcopale'.

Hello Otfried and Paul
I think Laura is right though that, in the medieval period, only the bishop's Christian name, not his surname, was used.
Regards,

Dear Paul
I agree with you. The few samples I know beginn typically with "S" (for sigillum) and continue with name and title in the genitive case.
Kind regards, O.

Asking for a friend, whose identity is disguised. A new bishop wants a Latin inscription on a seal. His draft contained a minor typo, but after correction it reads more or less: "Rufus Brown episcopus Narniae". However, I have a feeling that best practice would require "Sigillum Rufi Brown episcopi Narniae". What do y'all sigillographers say?
