Dear colleagues

In response to some recent queries, please note that the call for papers for the Media Education Research Journal 9.2 has been extended by a month to October 31st.

"MERJ offers a forum for the exchange of academic research into media education and pedagogy conducted by academics, practitioners and teachers situated in all sectors and contexts for media education. The journal aims to encourage dialogue between the sectors and between media educators from different countries, in order to facilitate the transfer of critical, empirical, action and discursive research into the complexity of media education as social practice."

Subject: Call for Participants: The Present and Future of History and Games, University of Warwick, 28 February 2020

Dear all,

Please see below for the call for participants for a one day symposium at the University of Warwick, exploring the intersection of History and Games:

Call for Participants

The Present and Future of History and Games

Institute of Advanced Study, University of Warwick, UK

28th February 2020

An interdisciplinary symposium that invites academics, teachers and practitioners at all levels to explore the intersection of history and games, and to discuss methods for future research, teaching, and practice.

While major video game franchises like Battlefield, Assassin’s Creed, and Red Dead Redemption are often in the spotlight, digital and non-digital games have for decades been exploring, interrogating, reinterpreting, and representing the past, and offering gameplay experiences underpinned by deliberately historical and culturally conscious narratives and worlds. Cross-media marketing campaigns that support the release of major titles stake claims for “authenticity” and “realism”, while other kinds of games explore and attempt to represent long-“othered” historical events, periods, processes and people that are not necessarily white or male. While World Wars and the “U.S.” of America take up much space in the video game industry, how are global and regional histories and perspectives beyond this represented? What purpose do counterfactuals or alternate histories serve for designers and/or players?

Meanwhile, there is an ever-growing body of academic research and popular criticism at the intersection of history and games. What directions might this research take in future, and how can we ensure that we are able to continue studying games and game-related ephemera? There is also increasing interest from students across disciplines and programmes wanting to study history and games. How do we approach this pedagogically?

Through panels, roundtable discussions, and networking sessions, participants are invited to explore the current state of research, practice, and teaching in this broadly-defined area, and the future directions that require consideration.

Proposals are invited for either 1) 15-minute research papers or other types of creative presentations, or 2) roundtables and/or topics for discussion. Both types of proposal should address (or subvert) one or more of the following key areas:

 1. Current Research and Future Directions: How do digital and non-digital games shed light on or complicate the study of cultural, social, and/or political history, heritage, archaeology and more? What areas require further scholarly attention?

 2. Player studies: How do players understand or challenge history through their experience of playing games?

 3. Game Design: How might game design practices be used to interrogate history and represent the past? What are the challenges of doing so?

 4. Teaching and Pedagogy: How can games be used to engage and teach students?

 5. Future-proofing: What steps need to be taken to ensure that the source material we need to continue studying the history in and of games is accessible and preserved?

Please submit proposals (max. 300 words) and brief bio(s) to esther.wright [at] warwick.ac.uk by 17th November 2019.

Participants will be notified of decisions by early December 2019.

Join us for the first of our Curatorial Conversations in 2019-2020, bringing the museum directors and makers of recent exhibitions at world-leading museums and galleries to the Warburg Institute to discuss their work.

These informal, public conversations discuss the issues of setting the directorial or curatorial agenda and staging meaningful encounters with objects. The series is designed to draw out discussion of the discoveries made, challenges faced and lessons learned in heading a collection and researching, putting together, installing, living with and thinking about internationally renowned exhibitions.

All welcome, and followed by a drinks reception.

Subject: CFP Algorithms for Her? Conference at King's College London

“Algorithms for her? feminist approaches to digital infrastructures,

cultures and economies”

January 17th 2020 - King’s College London

10am-5pm followed by a wine reception

Our daily lives are increasingly governed by algorithmic processes of

selection, identification and discrimination. This international symposium

focuses on the intersectional forms of injustice that algorithms – and the

systems in which they are embedded – help to propagate and sustain. Given

the significance and ubiquity of such processes in everyday life, and their

disproportionate effects on those marginalised across intersections of

gender, sexuality, class and race, this event will create a dedicated space

for the discussion of algorithmic forms of oppression and inequality.

Algorithms for Her? seeks to support the synthesis of in-depth analysis of

algorithms – together with their functions and entanglements – with

critical feminist works that meaningfully examine the production and ethics

of bias. "Newness" is often fetishised in analyses of digital culture. The

approaches sidelined by this fetishisation are often those by women and

scholars of colour, who struggle to have their contributions included in

dominant canons of thought. In some areas of scholarship we may be reaching

‘peak algorithm’ but relatively few studies can meaningfully be called

inclusive, reflective or feminist.

This symposium seeks to give platform to perspectives on algorithms and

algorithmic culture that are under-represented in the academy. We welcome

both traditional conference presentations (15 minutes in length) and

creative alternatives such as performances or artistic interventions.

We invite contributions related to any of the following areas:

- Intersectional feminist work critically examining platforms and their

economies/ approaches to machine learning, content moderation and algorithms

(broadly defined).

- Intersectional feminist work examining software/tools/app design and

infrastructure.

- Intersectional feminist work on platform labour and inequalities.

- Feminist methodologies for studying and teaching algorithms and the

ethical questions they raise.

- Industry/nonprofit cases of addressing discrimination/bias sustained by

and 'within' technologies.

Subject: International Cultures of Journalism Conference — ICJ2020

The University of Technology Sydney (UTS), School of Communication is pleased to hold the International Cultures of Journalism Conference on 27-28 May 2020 in Sydney, Australia

ICJ2020 is an ICA<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.icahdq.org%2Fpage%2F2020CFP&data=02%7C01%7Cmreadman%40BOURNEMOUTH.AC.UK%7C76d3cb1b8be34f0d30e708d745faeeac%7Cede29655d09742e4bbb5f38d427fbfb8%7C0%7C0%7C637054816361438369&sdata=BlaQEXTDPVsFWrIZ49Zz6UP9sU8wDv2bZWOwRuFkrsQ%3D&reserved=0> post-conference. It aims to spur an engaged scholarly debate on how different cultures of journalism become distinctly visible across the world. Though journalism is usually taught and practiced through a traditional model developed in the West, the routines and conventions of journalism have distinctive meanings in the non-Western context. For an effective practice of journalism, there is a need to develop a model that will sit outside the long-established Western paradigm and reflect better national contexts. Therefore, this conference offers an international and intercultural environment for academics, researchers, journalists and postgraduate students to exchange and share research results and experiences about the various cultures of journalism.

The International Cultures of Journalism conference ICJ2020 aims to focus on how journalism is developing in different countries outside Western contexts. Traditionally journalism across the world has been taught and practiced through an Anglo/American apparatus, which has not necessarily been very useful for non-Western contexts. The reasons behind this include differing political, economic, technological, social, and ideological systems in various parts of the world, which make one model of journalism training and practice infeasible. Even journalistic linguistic structures offer an effective variant to journalism practices across the world.

This two-day conference aims to discuss these variants within different structures of journalism operation around the world, and addresses issues that are relevant, but not restricted, to the following questions:

 * What are the challenges or opportunities for training and/or practicing journalism within different parts of the world?

 * What kind of factors influence the development of journalism in certain contexts?

 * Can we see particular practices of investigative journalism emerge in different cultural journalism contexts?

 * What kind of models of operation can develop in order to foster the training and practice of investigative journalism outside Western contexts?

 * What case studies can we use to understand the complexity of developing non-Western models of journalism?

 * What kind of theoretical or policy-based models of journalism can be developed for specific regions of the world?

 * How can cultures of journalism evolve in non-Western contexts? Are there examples of ones that have developed? What do they look like?

 * How have new technologies impacted and/or facilitated the development of distinctive cultures of journalism?

The conference will include paper and panel presentations, with keynote speakers: Professor Barbie Zelizer and Professor Hugo de Burgh.
