medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Just an addendum. Whilst priests were formally addressed as
Dominus/Sir or Magister/Master if with a higher degree, there might
have been colloquialisms, although I take these references from
dramatic representation. In 'Gammer Gurton's Nedle' (sometime in 16th
cent, but almost certainly depicting a Catholic clergyman), Dr Rat,
the incumbent, is addressed in various ways. He identifies himself as
'your friend, Master Rat', to which Gammer Gurton responds 'A, good
Master Doctor'. Her servant, Hodge, however, greets Rat as 'gaffer
Vicar'.
