Dear All (with apologies for cross-posting),
Scott McLaughlin (Music) and Tom Jackson (Media) are running a one-day exploratory workshop between University of Leeds and Leeds Museums & Galleries on Tuesday August 20th, 10.00 - 16.00 at Leeds Discovery Centre, Carlisle Road, Leeds LS10 1LB
This one-day workshop will provide the opportunity for academics, archivists and makers to work together in the generation of proposals
for research-informed and visitor-focused activities, installations, and events to be shown as part of a music-themed exhibition at Abbey House Museum in 2020. Inspired by curious and extraordinary musical objects from the Leeds Museums & Galleries archives, interdisciplinary teams will design a range of experiences which will engage the public in debates regarding the value of preserving and exhibiting such items. Through design-led and practical responses, this workshop will provide the opportunity to unlock lost sounds, add new layers of interpretation, and open up new ways of interacting with Leeds Museums & Galleries’ extensive music-related collections.
Note that most of the instruments in the collection are delicate (and have been on a shelf for a long time), and performing on these instruments is not an option we'll be exploring; excepting the possibility of some instruments being performed just enough to capture recordings, though not possible in all cases. The focus of the event is more about finding ways to allow museum visitors (and others) to experience and understand these instruments and their context in a manner that goes beyond seeing them in a glass-case.
We have limited capacity so please sign-up here if you're coming, and share widely with anyone you think would be interested.
