Dear colleagues,
As in every year we are contacting you regarding applying for our DAAD-Sprachassistenzen Programme.
Every year 10-month scholarships are offered by the DAAD to help young European citizens with a German university degree to gain experience in teaching German as a Foreign Language in the higher education sector. The scholarships are paid in full by the DAAD.
Every German department is very welcome to apply for a DAAD-Sprachassistenz regardless of also having a DAAD-LektorIn as part of their team.
Applications from all German departments in the UK and Ireland should reach the DAAD London office by the 6th September 2019.
Attention: Compared to earlier years, this deadline has been brought forward as the DAAD will publish the single available positions in October 2019 with the name of the university that will host a DAAD-Sprachassistenz and the respective short profile of the post.
An application should therefore include the following:
1) a short profile of the position, stating tasks during the Sprachassistenz and requirements for applicants.
2) In addition we would be grateful for a short report about your department, the involvement of the SprachassistentIn and possibilities of engagement within the department. Although we are aware that this is an extra burden, the reports are extremely useful and important to help us place the right person in your institution. Please also inform us in the report who the possible mentor of the SprachassistentIn would be.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards,
Sandra Deichsel

The DAAD-Sprachassistenzen Programme
1. Programme Description
In addition to the DAAD Lektoren programme, the DAAD offers 10-month scholarships for young European graduates with at least a Bachelor’s degree from a German university to gain experience in teaching German as a Foreign Language (DaF) and Landeskunde at German Departments in Great Britain and Ireland.
The programme is designed for university graduates of German, DaF and/or English Studies (Bachelor, Master, Magister or Staatsexamen). Experience in teaching DaF is desired but not a prerequisite.
The aim of the scholarship scheme is the qualification in the teaching of DaF on an academic level by the means of practical experience abroad. The scholarship holders should teach German Language and Area Studies to students of German Studies, Translation Studies or German for Non-Specialists. The maximum teaching load per week should not exceed 8 hours.
SprachassistentInnen are placed at institutions where they can be mentored either by a DAAD-LektorIn or another permanent member of staff. The host institutions are selected by the DAAD on the basis of an application and the placement process takes into account the host institution’s special requests concerning the profile of the candidate.
2. Application procedure
Applications from departments which would like to host a SprachassistentIn in the academic year 2020/2021 should reach the DAAD London by the 6th September 2019 via email: [log in to unmask]
The DAAD will inform the applying institutions on the success of their application in October 2019. The interviews of prospective scholarship holders will take place in spring 2020 at the DAAD’s head office in Bonn, after which the DAAD London is able to suggest suitable candidates to the respective departments.
