Hello,
Prototyping and creating AI/ML -based designs appears to have an
environmental cost that is significant.
Research published this week* shows the environmental cost of training a
single AI/ML model involves creating a carbon footprint of around 284 tonnes
of CO2: approximately equivalent to the lifetime emission of pollutants for
5 cars. Or if a car lasts around 13 years, the equivalent to 65 year of
pollution from one car.
Typically, AI/ML models are trained multiple times, and a single AI/ML-based
product may involve several models. Not an insignificant amount of pollution
in prototyping and manufacturing costs for the knowledge economy.
