Hi all,
As an engineering designer who has struggled to be accepted in both the
engineering community and the broader design community for decades, I would
like to contribute my 2 cents.
"Design is problem-solving." Well, no, obviously not.
But it does share some features with problem-solving.
One might visualize this on a spectrum where at one end are cases of
problem-solving that are trivially not design, and at the other are cases
that are clearly design and not problem-solving. The interesting part is
the "gray area" in between the two extremes. And, I believe, the most
fruitful way forward to understand what we mean by "design" is to look at
those gray cases in comparison to the two extrema.
A similar argument can be made for other activities (and artifacts) that
may be likened to design/designing: planning, creativity, an innate human
skill, etc.
One may then indeed develop a Venn-ish diagram where design is in the
centre, though only by virtue of being the object of study.
I say "Venn-ish" because the boundaries demarking regions in this diagram
would not be crisp (as is the usual case) but rather broad swaths.
In a logic framework, one might use the notion of fuzzy or rough sets to
represent the same ideas.
Shameless self-promotion: I wrote about this once upon a time.

might be, Design Principles and Practices, 1:1(19-28).
