All of this seems to assume that "we" agree on who/what "we" are. I believe that our fields are related and the word "design" points us toward one of the bits of commonality.
I don’t have the urge to limit the use of the term "design" for fields of study nor for fields of practice. I find that "graphic design" (or "communication design" or "visual communication" or any of the other terms that have been offered as a replacement over the years) is too limited to describe what I do and what I teach. That leaves limiting who/what is described by the word "design" as not a compelling issue for me.
Often the use of an adjective helps clarify (or at least start to clarify) what "design" means in a particular context. But sometimes the language beguiles people, especially those with a set of strong assumptions about the focus of "design."
