Does anyone else found centrally holed bone discs cut from the arched part of the os frontale of newborn calves (Bos taurus)? We have three of them from terps in the province of Friesland (the Netherlands). They date to the late iron age or the early Roman period (200 BC – AD 50). There are no traces of handling of the discs or of suspension on a cord. Our provisional explanation is that they were magic objects. Who may have a better explanation?

The first two photos show the part of the frontale that was cut from the bone to get the discs, from outside and from inside the bone.
The second two photos show one of the discs, with the central hole.
