Dear all,
As a (female, elderly, white academic and thus privileged in many ways) lurker on this list, I have always enjoyed following the discussions. The key point for me is that the list is about the ideas, discussion and the arguments. Sometimes statements are provocative or even offensive, but for me that is a natural part of any living discussion - and can often lead to development and progress (in a good discussion it should be possible to be wrong, argue - and then reach a better/new understanding). Must admit I was worried recently when, instead of arguments, I saw a series of mails that just claimed "offense" (without arguments) and appeared to attack a person, not the expressed ideas - this made me seriously consider stop following the list.
Since I am a mostly lurker, this doesn't really affect anyone else much, just wanted to make it visible that some of us appreciate an open discussion climate on the list even if it means we will sometimes be offended.
Best wishes,
Charlotte
