Hello,
I'm pleased to announce that Sankalpa Rural Development Society (SRDS) has
just won the world Energy Globe Award for Water for their successful design
and implementation of bore-well recharge to provide water to Indian farmers.
The world Energy Globe Award is often considered to be the 'Nobel Prize'
equivalent in Sustainability.
Across India, hundreds of thousands of small -scale Indian farmers, their
families and workers' whole livelihoods are collapsing due to farm
bore-wells drying up. The consequences for families in this situation can be
dire.: tens of thousands of farmers are committing suicide each year; there
is mass migration of rural families into poverty in city slum tent villages;
young girl children are picked up on-mass and taken into unsavoury positions
in the cities; and farmers in areas that have high suicide rates are unable
to marry because no-one wants to marry a suicide risk.
The successful research and design of the bore-well recharge system being
rolled out to thousands of farms by Sankalpa Rural Development Society is
from their CEO Sikandar Meeranaik. Farms with the Sikandar's system usually
have their borewells come back fully within one rainy season. Typically, the
rate of return for the farmer is about 20:1 in the first year, i.e. the
payback time in income vs cost averages at less than one month, but the
real benefit is the continuing life and existence of the farmer, their
family and the families of their workers. Success rate of the technique is
100%
Winning the Energy Globe Award has put Sankalpa Rural Development Society
and Sikandar Meeranaik on a pathway to global expansion with interest from
many different countries. Or viewed from the other direction, many societies
with water sourcing problems now have an economical solution that is a an
effective alternative to dams, long distance water pipelines, water
carrying and tankering, desalination and other traditional and expensive
ways of addressing water shortages,

AA key question is whatas design researchers can we learn and how can the
ability to do research into design (and do design) be improved by studying
the development of this rural water solution design. Sikandar's research
and design led to an exceptionally cost effective solution, achieved by
personal drive (Sikandar's) focused on addressing a social problem (collapse
of rural society) rather than any formal design or design thinking process
directly relating to the design of a solution.
Regards,
Terence
