A good book, which I don't think has been mentioned here, on the HfG Ulm is by Martin Krampen and Günther Hörmann, in parallel German and English texts:
"Die Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm - Anfänge eines Prjektes der unnachgiebigen Moderne" / The Ulm School of Design - Beginnings of a Project of Unyielding Modernity", Berlin: Ernst & Sohn. 2003. ISBN 3 433 01647 X.
It includes many interviews with founders, teachers and students of the school, extracts from original documents, examples of the design work carried out there, commentaries on its pedagogy, its ending and its international influence, etc.
Ulm was a relatively short-lived educational experiment but it went on to have significant influence not only in education but also in practice and research in design, through the work of many of its participants.
