medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
apologies for cross-posting
I have just uploaded to my online archive another batch of new photographs.
One very well-known object is included, the reliquary box from the
Sancta Sanctorum (C6-7):
<http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/SancSancBox.html>
At least when I saw it, the object was displayed behind curving glass
and tilted back at a sharp angle, which may explain why most images on
the Web are scans from print publications. I parked in front of it for
hours, and when I got home combined 209 exposures to make the 13 images
I have posted. The painting on the lid is encaustic, and noticeably
textured.
An object that most will probably not know is the c.1410 portrait ring
of Jean sans Peur:

Thanks to accommodating curators I had access to this outside the case,
so I was able to get a number of details.
And closer to home (for me) is material from Chicago, the University of:
<http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/UniversityChicago.html>
and the Art Institute:
<http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/AIC.html>
The university has a lovely head probably from Cluny III.
At the AIC I skipped Seurat (what can I say? I'm a medievalist) in favor
of the silver reliquary of Ardian and Natalia, metalwork designed by
Pugin and Viollet-le-Duc, a splendid Pelican in her Piety (late
C17-early C18), and other assorted goodies.
While writing these new web pages, I realized that my genre and
iconographic indices had become rather chaotic. I have now redone those,
so finding things that you need should be more straightforward (I hope).
Access is still easiest from the first page of the archive,
<www.kornbluthphoto.com/archive-1.html>. Or if you prefer, you can
search the site using Google. In a Google search box, enter
<site:www.kornbluthphoto.com> <your search term> (without the angle
brackets, of course).
And for anyone curious, I have recently updated my "about" page to be
less antiquated: <www.kornbluthphoto.com/about.html>. If you know anyone
who needs to have images made, please tell them about me, and/or me
about them!
best,
Genevra
