Dear Colleagues,
I would appreciate very much if you could forward this ad to potential candidates.
Best regards,

Funded PhD position, Physics of Volcanoes, Potsdam, Germany.
The PhD position is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in the frame of a French-German cooperation (ANR-DFG NLE 2018). The work will be carried out at the GFZ, group of Dr. Eleonora Rivalta (Physics of magma transport) and the University of Potsdam, group of Prof. Gert Zöller (Applied mathematics).
The entire project is called "MagmaPropagator: A forecasting tool for location and time of volcanic eruptions due to off-conduit magma propagation”, co-PI is Virginie Pinel from ISTerre, Chambery, France. The goal is to combine state-of-the-art mechanical magma propagation approaches with statistical tools (data assimilation and Monte Carlo inversions) to forecast the location and time of a fissure eruption following magma propagation below the surface. We foresee application to three cases: Campi Flegrei and Etna in Italy, and Piton de la Fournaise, La Réunion.
In more detail, the position is about combining available predictive models of dike trajectory with statistical tools and observations to develop physics-based forecasts of where ascending magma will intersect the Earth’s surface to erupt in the future. The models will be validated them on the three test cases. The daily work will largely focus on the physics of magma transport and programming software tools, but there will be also trips to the volcanic observatories.

Responsibilities:
The successful applicant is expected to develop modelling approaches and software tools in close cooperation with our partners Dr. Virginie Pinel at ISTerre in Chambery and Dr. Francesco Maccaferri at INGV-Osservatorio Vesuviano, and to validate them with data from the three test volcanoes in collaboration with the three observatories involved (INGV- Osservatorio Vesuviano, INGV-Osservatorio Etneo, OVPF in La Réunion).
Qualifications:
You should have a Master degree in Geophysics, Mathematics, Physics, Geology, Engineering or other related fields (it is enough if you have handed in your thesis by the position start time), and have an interest in the physics of volcanoes. Computational and physical skills are necessary, experience in volcanology or statistical analysis are an advantage. You should also have excellent communication skills (good written and spoken English, good presentation and writing skills), good interpersonal skills and the enthusiasm to develop and apply new techniques.
Contact:
The position may start between May and July. Further information can be obtained from Dr. Eleonora Rivalta. Please send your application in English by email to [log in to unmask] AND [log in to unmask] by 15.03.2019.
The application should comprise a cover letter with a brief statement of research experience and motivation, a CV as well as copies of undergraduate and graduate certificates.
