Education and Training

Leicester College urgently require an External Examiner for the level 6 Professional Graduate Certificate in Education and training (PGCE) and the level 5 University Diploma in Education and Training with De Montfort University. The nominee will be appointed to start on the 01/10/19 for a period of four years.

These 2 year, part-time courses introduce aspects of teaching, learning and assessment and enable students to develop work as a teacher, trainer or tutor. These courses are for those working, or wanting to work, with learners who are aged 16 or over and includes areas such as sixth form, further education, offender learning and adult and community education. Successful graduates can apply for QTLS (Qualified Teacher in Learning and Skills status). The course aims to establish underpinning knowledge while developing practical skills associated with teaching, learning and assessment within the education and training sector.  

The level 6 Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is available to candidates who have already achieved an undergraduate degree and the level 5 University Diploma in Education and Training will be offered to candidates who hold a minimum level 3 qualification or significant industry experience in their specialist teaching area. Applicants must evidence of a minimum of 50 hours per year of independent and practical teaching to groups of learners while studying.

The programmes are formed of eight modules which include two teaching practice components and a piece of action research. Assignments vary from essays and presentations to collaboration with peers (lesson study). A strong focus is placed on the practical development of students and their classroom performance. The second year of the programme encourages builds on the underpinning knowledge gained during year one and explores a wider range of concepts in greater detail. In particular, a greater emphasis is placed on independent learning, peer collaboration and professional enquiry with regards to teaching, learning and assessment within a specialist area

Year 1 Modules include: Planning and Preparing for Teaching, Learning and Assessment, Investigation and Applying Theories of Learning for Inclusive Practice, Exploring Principles of Assessment, Evaluation and Feedback and Wider Professional Development (part one).

Year 2 Modules include: Developing Practice through Action Research, Developing Effective Practice through Lesson Study, Designing an Inclusive and Innovative Curriculum, Wider Professional Development, part two.
Assessment methods include presentations, written assignments and practical teaching observations.

Main Responsibilities of an External Examiner: 
• Scrutinise and advise on curriculum development and design
• Review sample work and decide whether the assessment of students is fair
• Confirm that Leicester College and DMU’s awards are comparable in standards to awards granted by other institutions and comply with national standards
• Attend relevant Programme Assessment Boards 
• Submit an annual report detailing providing pertinent information and assessing the observed practices 

The External Examiner will receive £360 on completion of an annual report, and claim form, at the end of year. In addition, External Examiners will receive a visit fee of £90 per visit for a maximum of three visits, and will be reimbursed for any reasonable expenses. 

Criteria for appointment:
• Although previous external examining experience would be preferable, it is not essential for this role 
• Please note that the successful candidate will need to be based in the UK

N.B. External Examiners should not normally be appointed if they have had close and persistent contact with a current member of staff of the collaborative partner at any time during the previous five years.
