Leicester College urgently require an External Examiner for the Foundation Degree in Community Health and Welfare with De Montfort University. The nominee will be appointed to start on the 01/10/19 for a period of four years.
The Foundation Degree in Community Health and Welfare is designed to reflect the emerging themes in the health and social care sector. The focus of this course is to ensure that all modules are relevant and applicable to health and social care settings. Using work placements, students reflect upon experiences and relate to their studies, developing knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues with regards to social sciences and community health. For those wishing to progress to higher study, the course embeds the essential skills needed, as well as preparing students for the dissertation aspect of a top up. The level 5 research module is specifically relevant to this. Students achieving a merit at the end of this programme can progress to the level 6 (Hons) degree at De Montfort University (DMU).
Level 4 Modules include: Research, Study Skills and Personal Development; Common Physiological Disorders; Differences and Diversity in Britain and an Introduction to Developmental Psychology, Introduction to Management; Community Health and Well Being; Social Context of Family Life and an Introduction to Counselling Skills.
Level 5 Modules include: Sociology of Health; Developing Leadership; Safeguarding People at Risk; Mental Health: Experience, Policy and Practice; Development of Public and Community Services; Neighbourhood and Community Welfare and Health and Community Research Studies.
Whilst primarily an academic programme of study, there are a variety of assessment methods used for different modules. This includes presentations, role play, synoptic exams, written reports and essays.
Main Responsibilities of an External Examiner:
• Scrutinise and advise on curriculum development and design
• Review sample work and decide whether the assessment of students is fair
• Confirm that Leicester College and DMU’s awards are comparable in standards to awards granted by other institutions and comply with national standards
• Attend relevant Programme Assessment Boards
• Submit an annual report detailing providing pertinent information and assessing the observed practices
The External Examiner will receive £360 on completion of an annual report, and claim form, at the end of year. In addition, External Examiners will receive a visit fee of £90 per visit for a maximum of three visits, and will be reimbursed for any reasonable expenses.
Criteria for appointment:
• Although previous external examining experience would be preferable, it is not essential for this role
• Please note that the successful candidate will need to be based in the UK
N.B. External Examiners should not normally be appointed if they have had close and persistent contact with a current member of staff of the collaborative partner at any time during the previous five years.
