Hello all
Has anyone on the list published on design interventions to improve healthcare communication specifically in hospital emergency rooms? Would you reply to highlight your research?
If you’ve worked on design interventions to improve healthcare communication, but haven’t published, I’d love to hear about your experience and impressions of working with ER staff in a design context.
Mobile response teams for opioid overdoses
The research project this relates to studies mobile response teams that are called out to local emergency rooms to assist patients who present with opioid overdose symptoms. The mobile teams can take more time with overdose patients than ER staff can, and have more customized skills and knowledge to meet the needs of overdose patients. The mobile teams are composed of people who are in recovery themselves, are trained in social work and trauma management, and have a wealth of knowledge about available services patients might need to access. The mobile teams also carry Naloxone (a drug to reverse overdoses). To use the mobile teams, any ER staff member can call a phone number, and the team will arrive within a given time frame.
While the mobile response service has been created to address a huge need, and (I am told) hospital staff and management are all in agreement that this is an important and helpful service, staff are not calling the number to request team visits. I’m leading efforts to find out why this is, and to design interventions that result in more calls to the outreach team.
If you have design research experience related to this issue, I’d love to hear from you, either on or off-list.
For the benefit of the list, I’ll summarize any and all responses I get.
Please note, I’m not looking for a philosophical discussion about issues surrounding this research. While there is value in the abstract discussions on the list generally, in this instance I am specifically looking for feedback from other researchers’ with related research experiences.
Looking forward to the conversation.
Best
