medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I have just posted 264 new photos to my online archive, images that you
can access via the index page for Switzerland:
www.KornbluthPhoto.com/Switzerland.html
These include, among other things:
the fortress/basilica of Valère (c.1100 +), perched atop a very large
rocky outcrop, with a walkway across the upper nave for watchmen on the
exterior fortifications and a large group of C15 wall paintings
Sion cathedral, with a narrow barrel-vaulted passage under the C12 tower
from the west entrance to the nave
the Carolingian Altheus reliquary
the bone and lead reliquary that I spoke about a few years ago at Kalamazoo
four knitted purses, C14
For some time, I have been too busy shooting new images to index and
post fresh material to my archive. Newer list members therefore may not
know about the resource. It contains photographs of art and material
culture from all periods, heavily weighted toward the long Middle Ages,
especially the early medieval and Late Antique cultures that are the
foci of my own research. There are now about 5150 images online. All are
posted at sizes appropriate for oral presentations, and are freely
available for such use. Unless otherwise noted in captions, all can be
licensed for publication-- fees allow me to continue adding new
photographs, though I keep costs as low as I can for colleagues.
The archive is fully indexed by historical culture or period, strict
chronology, iconography, medium, genre, present location, and names of
known artists:

I have thousands of images that are not yet posted, so if you need
something that you do not find, drop me a note and I will look through
the backlog.
Anyone interested in the development of the archive might like to read a
presentation about it:

Indexing and captioning are as accurate as I can make them, so if you
find an error please let me know! Also let me know if there is something
that you need photographs of. I travel quite a bit, and I keep a running
list of desiderata. I very happily accept commissions, and can often
arrange special access when needed, but I also shoot anything that
crosses my path and interests me or someone else, time and energy
permitting.
best to all (with apologies for cross-posting),
Genevra
