CFP – One-day Workshop: ‘Musicology or Ethnomusicology? Discussing Disciplinary Boundaries in Non-Western Art Music’
CFP Deadline: 15 December 2018
Faculty of Music, University of Cambridge, March 2019. In association with the Institute of Musical Research
The study of musicology, conventionally understood as the study of ‘art’ music, has tended to presuppose an unwieldy division between the study of written sources in a Western context and what has been termed ethnomusicology; thanks to this division, musicology implicitly opposes oral traditions of music in cultures outside the Western world. In the past thirty years, of course, these boundaries have been both challenged and redefined; yet the division still persists.
The aim of this workshop is thus to address the limitations of Euro-North American academia when addressing art music from outside Europe and North America. The discussion will centre on the study of art music in any context that has been labelled as ‘Non-Western’.
Suggested themes for submissions include, but are not limited to:
- Disciplinary differences between musicology and ethnomusicology
- Definitions of art music
- Notions of the ‘West’
- Non-Western art music
- New approaches to the study of art music outside the West
Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be sent to [log in to unmask] by December 15. Please include title, name, institutional affiliation, and a short biography (50-80 words). Applicants will be notified of the outcome by mid-January.The workshop will take place at the Faculty of Music (University of Cambridge) in mid-March (date TBC).
