Dear Jinan,
Re fear of posting: I wanted to reply to your previous post. I did not
because I was mostly going to disagree with what you wrote and anticipated
a barrage of posts which directly or indirectly accused me of western or
scientific centeredness or of being a white male (which is more or less the
same as accusing me of being tall and having curly hair, that is, true yet
irrelevant).
Let it be clear that I’m not complaining. It’s a reasonable assumption that
the world can probably survive the absence of my opinion about things.
Further, I have decided not to reply to your previous post, in other words,
I wasn’t pressured or bullied not do write, rather it was a personal
decision.
Why did I decided against replying? Well, while I’m not entirely sure, I
guess the atmosphere in this list has not been fun of late, so why bother?
I enjoy arguing, I particularly enjoy engaged and passionate arguments
about art, science, books, love, and ideas in general; you know, the stuff
worth living for.
I think we shouldn’t lose the ability to gracefully play with ideas. If I
have to consider a thousand different variables before posting a reply to a
debate on an email list I run the risk of committing one of the greatest
sins of our age: becoming a bore.
Anyway, I enjoyed Steven Pinker's latest book it was a thoroughly good read
and very optimistic and inspiring.
Cheers,
João
