Curt,
I know what you mean but please pardon my giving some unsolicited advice.
If someone you admire points out that you’ve said something dumb, learn from it and then send a thank you note that says you’re glad they helped you move forward. Use what you’ve learned from that to get yourself closer to being the writer that others use as texts for class. (The next time you post, it will probably be more solid. If not, you’ll be wrong at a more sophisticated level.)
But don’t assume that you’ll always be wrong and your heroes will be right. If you’re like me, you’ll find out that people are complex combinations and that includes being brilliant in one way and impressively dim in other ways. [I won’t make claims to brilliance but I assume there are many people out there who’ll vouch for my dimness.] If I met someone I agreed with on everything, it would scare me.
There’s no reason that someone’s work can’t inspire you even if they are off-base when they put you on blast. So don’t refuse to learn and grow when you’re wrong but don’t assume you’re wrong just because someone tells you that you are.
In the end, nobody will remember something dumb you said unless you say it in an arrogant manner. If you later say something smart, they’ll remember that. (If they remember dumb stuff but not smart stuff, they have a problem.)
