What? Is anyone seriously proposing this - as opposed to just lazily
using machine translations in place of human translations? I live in the
US, and I have not heard this from anyone in the general public or
elsewhere. I'm sorry, Beth, but why spend a whole month giving credence
to such obviously simplistic and nutty ideas?

I am creating a series of big questions to bookend the course. These questions will focus on the need to learn languages in the age of rapidly growing AI and machine learning. We will explore arguments for and against making the effort to learn a language as a human speaker, when AI and computer translation offers tools that in the minds of many in the general public (in the US), decrease the need for humans to learn languages. I would like to ask the list--- what kinds of resources (book chapters, articles, webpages) would you suggest for introducing these debates to college freshmen? The course lasts just two weeks, and will include a series of short writing assignments and in-class debates, so the resource material should be concise yet provocative.
