Dear all,
this is a friendly reminder for an upcoming conference in Athens, 9-11
November 2018
*INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE *
*European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018*
*CALL FOR PAPERS*
“The Birth of Contemporary Europe: World War I, Music and the Arts”
9 – 11 November 2018, Athens, Greece
World War I has been the turning point towards the birth of Contemporary
Europe. It signalled the crucial end of the Empires and the shift towards
new perspectives. The artistic and cultural output of the period in
discussion has been rich and diverse, something that has been partially
reflected on the scope of projects such as*Europeana 1914-1918* and others.
In this international multidisciplinary conference, we expect to discuss
several issues that have to do with artistic and cultural manifestations
and their connection tomusic and sound in general, which occur both during
but also after the end of the Great War. In this wide perspective we will
seek papers that will focus on issues such as (but not limited to):
-Music and Visual Arts
-Cinema, moving image, sound and music
-Literature and musical settings
-Painting, new techniques and the avant-garde idiom and their connection to
music
-Folk and demotic idioms and gestures reflected on music
-The popular element in music
-Music and Society during the Great War and after
-Philosophical concepts on music and the Great War
-Cultural history of Europe during the period of World War I, focusing on
musical aspects
This list is only indicative and we urge potential participants to send us
their proposals on the general framework set above. We particularly urge
the participation of academics in early stages of their career, PhD
candidates and young researchers.
